Sitting atop Crown Point, Vista House is the crown jewel of the Columbia River Gorge.
While the viewpoint and parking have remained open, Vista House has been mostly closed over the past two years. It had a limited reopening last fall and closed again for needed repairs. Now, the building is ready to welcome guests with a more new schedule.
The Columbia River Gorge’s Vista House
The historic 1918 attraction at the top of Crown Point offers visitors an incredible view of the Columbia River Gorge. Back before I-84, Vista House was built as a rest stop observatory for travelers on the old Columbia River Gorge Highway. It was also a memorial honoring Oregon’s pioneers, especially those who made the journey down the Columbia River. Recognized for its historical significance, Vista House was added to the list of National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
Located about 30 minutes outside Portland, Vista House is the gateway of the gorge. Whether you’re headed to view the waterfalls or taking the scenic route, Vista House is a great place for a pit stop along the way with parking and a paved viewpoint.
At Crown Point, you’ll be treated to nearly 365 degree views of the gorge standing 733 feet above the Columbia River. When you head inside Vista House, you’ll be treated to the stunning architecture. From top to bottom, Vista House is quite a site. Above, the high ceiling is complete with a rotunda, cooper accents and original green opalized glass. Below are intricate floor tiles made of Alaskan Tokeen Marble.
On the lower level, you’ll find a gallery with regional artwork and local gift items. There is also an espresso bar serving refreshments and snacks available for purchase.
Hours
Vista House is open Friday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you visit on a particularly windy day, the house will close when winds go above 50 mph.
Friends of Vista House, a group of volunteers that keep the doors open, operate the attraction. Volunteers are needed to keep Vista House open to the public. If you’re interested, reach out to Friends of Vista House at volunteer@vistahouse.com.
Vista House is free to visit. Parking is limited.
Vista House is located at 40700 Historic Columbia River Hwy. in Corbett. For more information, visit Vista House’s website.
