Dongzhi: Winter Solstice Celebration at Lan Su Chinese Garden

Lan Su Chinese Garden invites you to immerse yourself in the rich traditions of Dongzhi, the winter solstice. 

Originating from the Han Dynasty, Dongzhi holds a special place in Chinese culture, symbolizing family reunions, good fortune and the promise of a bountiful year ahead.

Lan Su Chinese Garden is hosting weekend events that honor these traditions and invite you to participate in the festivities. 

Dongzhi: Winter Solstice Celebration at Lan Su Chinese Garden

Lan Su Chinese Garden invites you to celebrate Dongzhi with a blend of tradition, delicious flavors and enchanting lights. The winter solstice celebration is December 13-14 and 20-21 from 5-7 p.m.

Here are the activities taking place each night: 

Tangyuan Treats: Learn how to roll tangyuan—a classic Dongzhi rice-ball dessert soup—from colorful doughs. Taste a sample prepared by the teahouse.

Longing For Spring: Pick up a take-home coloring activity and count down from winter solstice to spring’s arrival.

Dongzhi Tree Decorating: Get a small apple ornament to place on a Mulberry tree in one of the central courtyards and make a wish for the prosperity of your loved ones. Ornaments are limited to 75 per night. 

AR installation in the Garden: CETI brings interactive AR displays that lets visitors take a journey through the stories of Chinese Americans in Portland.

Photo Op and Gift: Gather around our unique holiday photo op with a Chinese Santa and decorated bamboo arch. Professional photographers will provide a link to digital copies of your photos. The cost is $15 per group. As part of the Santa experience, kids receive a peace apple, learn to write the Chinese character for peace on red paper and then wrap it up to give to a loved one.

Admission

These festivities are included with general admission. Tickets are $16 for ages 18-61, $15 for ages 62 and over or students (18+ with I.D.), $13 for ages 6-17 and free for children 5 and under.
