Lan Su Chinese Garden invites you to immerse yourself in the rich traditions of Dongzhi, the winter solstice.
Originating from the Han Dynasty, Dongzhi holds a special place in Chinese culture, symbolizing family reunions, good fortune and the promise of a bountiful year ahead.
Lan Su Chinese Garden hosts weekend events that honor these traditions and invite you to participate in the festivities.
Lan Su Chinese Garden invites you to celebrate Dongzhi with a blend of tradition, delicious flavors and enchanting lights. The winter solstice celebration remaining weekends are December 13-14 and 20-21 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There are also special evening events on December 12-13 and December 19-20, from 5-7 p.m.
Meet Asian Santa: Enjoy the festive atmosphere while taking photos with Asian Santa. Availability from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prices start at $5.
Hear The Story of Dumplings: Uncover the tale of compassion and cleverness wrapped inside every dumpling, then make your own dumpling craft to take home from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Join a Tea Chat with Tea Master Eric: Discover how ancient Chinese scholars cultivated health and happiness with tea. Only on Saturdays from Saturdays from 1-2 p.m.
Learn About Qinggong: Known as “pure offering,” it the the practice of cultivating expression of a scholar’s taste, creativity and cultural refinement. Only on Sundays from 1-2 p.m.
Participate in an Incense Art Experience: Using special tools, participants gently smooth the ash and press a mold to create intricate incense patterns. Only on Sundays from 10-11 a.m.
Illuminated Lion Dance Performance: Portland Lee’s Association demonstrates radiance, strength and beauty in this celebratory performance from 6-6:40 p.m.
Hear Melodies of Winter Cheer: Relax in the joyful atmosphere of classic Christmas songs and festive melodies from 5-6 p.m.
Hands-on Tangyuan and Dumpling Making: Make tangyuan, sweet rice balls, and dumplings, then sample each and decide your favorite. This activity is open from 5-7 p.m.
Ticket prices vary. The daytime event is $16.95 for adults and $13.95 for youth ages 6-18. Children 5 and under attend for free.
The nighttime event is $22.95. Children 5 and under attend for free.
