Here’s a closer look at the performances included in the Portland Living on the Cheap discount.
Circa: Wolf
October 14
Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall
If your idea of dance includes a little bit of “How did they just do that?”, start here.
Australian contemporary circus company Circa returns with Wolf, featuring 10 performers who combine acrobatics, aerial work and dance. The piece explores instinct, belonging and the tension between being an individual and being part of a group.
It’s a good pick for anyone intrigued by contemporary circus or looking for something that stretches beyond a traditional dance performance.
Trinity Irish Dance Company
November 19-21
Newmark Theatre
Trinity Irish Dance Company has spent 35 years putting a contemporary spin on Irish dance while keeping its athleticism and musical roots front and center.
This family-friendly mixed repertory program includes live music, Portland premieres and Trinity favorites. Portland audiences will also get to see a new work from Ashley Roland and Jamey Hampton, the choreographers behind local dance company BodyVox.
If you love the rhythm and precision of Irish dance but want to see what choreographers can do with the form beyond the traditional, this may be your show.
Ballet Hispánico: CARMEN.maquia
January 20
Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall
Ballet Hispánico brings a new interpretation of a familiar story to Portland with CARMEN.maquia.
Created by choreographer Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, the production reimagines Carmen through contemporary dance while drawing on the movement and energy of flamenco and paso doble.
Social Tango Project: Social Tango
March 3
Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall
You don’t need to know your tango steps to appreciate this one.
Buenos Aires-based Social Tango Project makes its White Bird debut with a performance centered on the music, movement and community of Argentine tango.
Social Tango features 10 dancers and five live musicians and follows one woman’s journey into the world of tango. For anyone who enjoys live music as much as dance, this performance offers both.
Fresco Dance Company: Why Things Go Wrong
March 18-20
The Patricia Reser Center for the Arts
Sometimes things go wrong because of bad luck. Sometimes it’s poor judgment. Often, it’s a little of both.
That idea is at the heart of Why Things Go Wrong from Tel Aviv-based Fresco Dance Company.
Choreographed by Sylva Šafková and performed by eight dancers, the work looks at luck, decision-making and human behavior through contemporary dance. The approach moves between humor and more reflective moments, making this one of the season’s more concept-driven performances.
Tentacle Tribe: Prism
April 22-24
Newmark Theatre
Hip-hop, contemporary dance and visual illusion come together in Prism from Montreal-based Tentacle Tribe.
The company uses mirrors, lighting and its signature movement style to play with reflection and perception, creating a stage that changes along with the dancers.
If you’re drawn to dance performances with a strong visual element, Prism is one to consider.
MOMIX: Botanica
May 13-15
Newmark Theatre
MOMIX returns to Portland with Botanica, a performance inspired by the changing seasons and the natural world.
There’s a lot happening onstage beyond dance. The production also incorporates illusion, projections, giant puppetry and elaborate costumes to create its unusual landscapes.
For anyone who likes highly visual theater — or wants to introduce someone to dance with a performance that has plenty to look at — Botanica offers an accessible entry point.
Ragamala Dance Company: Sacred Earth
June 9-10
Newmark Theatre
White Bird’s season concludes with Ragamala Dance Company’s Sacred Earth.
Created by Aparna and Ranee Ramaswamy, the work brings together Bharatanatyam, live music and poetry inspired by South Indian artistic traditions.
The performance explores the relationship between people and the natural world, bringing dance, music and visual storytelling together onstage.
