Portland’s Chinatown has a rich history, and some of its stories are only now coming to light.
On Friday, October 30, the Portland Chinatown Museum is hosting a community celebration to unveil the first updates to Beyond the Gate: A Tale of Portland’s Historic Chinatowns, an exhibition exploring the history of Portland’s Chinese American community.
The event takes place from 4 to 6 p.m. and offers visitors an early look at the museum’s ongoing project to expand the exhibition for its 10th anniversary.
Beyond the Gate Community Celebration
The updated exhibition will highlight more of the people who helped shape Portland’s historic Chinatowns, including local business owners, performers, artists and military veterans.
Some of these stories have only been uncovered in the past decade, thanks to community members who shared their family histories with the museum.
The October 30 celebration marks the beginning of a larger project. The museum plans to continue updating the exhibition over the next two years, adding new stories and historical perspectives as its research progresses.
Families, longtime Portland residents and anyone interested in local history are invited to attend and see how the exhibition is evolving.
