Share your love of “The Princess Bride” with hundreds of other Portlanders Friday evening at the FREE viewing in Pioneer Courthouse Square. The film is the next in the Flicks on the Bricks series of PG or PG-13 films being shown almost every Friday night in August. (August 22 is NOT on the film schedule.) There will be live entertainment by local singer-songwriter Jared Evers, presented by KINK 101.9, until dusk, and then everyone can settle into their low-back chairs and cushions and enjoy the story.
What’s not to love about “The Princess Bride,” which has proven to be a timeless classic? Whether we’re addicted to this film or not, we have reminders everywhere. Did you love “House of Cards”? Well, of course! Because Claire, Francis’s classy wife, was actually Buttercup! Well, okay, her real name is Robin Wright. Cary Elwes, who played Buttercup’s True Love, has a new memoir coming out in October. Called “As You Wish,” the book will inevitably focus on “The Princess Bride,” which was the pinnacle of his career. The late great Andre the Giant used to visit Portland on the wrestling circuit; as did Wallace Shawn, on the drama circuit. Inconceivable? No, I saw him in a forgettable production here of Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House.” And in another brush with fame, I once saw Mandy Patinkin dining in the restaurant of The Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C., and was tempted to impersonate his waiter and then dramatically announce, “Prepare to dine!” (His signature line in the film, in case you haven’t watched it two dozen times, is “Prepare to die.”)
Coming up on Friday, August 15, is “Jurassic Park.” And on Friday, August 29, it’s “Frozen.”
