Sauvie Island is a hotspot for birds of prey. Join the Bird Alliance of Oregon, Topaz Farm and Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife for a special family-friendly event for outdoor enthusiasts.

Hawks and Hot Chocolate: A Winter Birding Adventure on Sauvie Island
On Saturday, February 21, 2026, the event kicks off at 10 a.m. at Topaz Farm. Check in and grab a map for your day’s exploration of Sauvie Island Wildlife Area.
Be sure to bring your own reusable mug to enjoy complimentary hot chocolate, while supplies last. Also, Topaz Farm has farm-baked goods and s’mores kits for the fire pits available available for purchase, providing the perfect fuel for your adventure.
Sauvie Island is renowned for its diverse bird population. Venture through the island’s birding hotspots and witness the birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. While you’re exploring, meet naturalists stationed at each location with spotting scopes, ready to answer questions and share their knowledge about these magnificent creatures.
During this event, search for the fantastic four of raptors:
- Northern harrier
- Red-tailed hawk
- American kestrel
- Bald eagle
This winter birding excursion is designed for everyone, from seasoned birdwatchers to families looking for a unique outdoor activity. Feel free to bring your crew, your family or come solo for a cool and casual day on Sauvie Island.
Native Habitat Tour with Sauvie Island Natives
New this year, learn about native plants and how they support birds and tips to attract more wildlife to your backyard at Sauvie Island Natives Nursery. Tours are available from 11 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2 p.m. Spots are limited. Also the nursery will offer a 10% discount during the event.

Event Details and Permit
The event takes place Saturday, February 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., allowing you to come and go as you please during these hours. No advance registration required.
A $10 parking permit is required for Sauvie Island Wildlife Area. Permits can be purchased online only.
To purchase your permit online, visit Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife’s website and scroll to the bottom of the page to the “General” Category and select “View All.” Select the Daily Wildlife Area Parking Permit.
