When Do the Lowest Tides Occur?
The lowest tides typically occur during the full moon and new moon phases, when the gravitational pull is strongest. In Oregon, the most extreme low tides are usually observed in the late spring and summer months.
When are the Lowest Tides of the Year?
The lowest tides of the year are happening in June, July and August. On these dates, low tide is at negative 1.5 feet or less.
In 2024, there are the lowest tide days:
- June 5-8
- June 22-25
- July 5-6
- July 21-24
- August 19-20
Low tide is in the morning on these dates. If you are visiting the beach on these dates, check tide times at tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov. Keep in mind, the tide levels will vary slightly depending on the beach you visit.
Tips for Exploring the Lowest Tide Days
Check tide tables. The ideal time to arrive at the beach is when the tide is going out. If you arrive at low tide, the water will be rising right as you’re starting to explore.Check the tide times at tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov.
Wear appropriate footwear: The rocky shores and wet sand can be challenging to navigate. Wear sturdy, waterproof footwear.
Be mindful of marine life: Each tide pool is its own delicate ecosystem. Observe the marine creatures without disturbing them. Avoid picking up animals or moving rocks.
Have a charged phone or camera ready. The exposed ocean floor offers unique photo opportunities. From vibrant sea stars to intricate rock formations, there’s plenty to capture.
Safety first: Keep an eye on the tides and be aware of the incoming water. It’s easy to get engrossed in exploration and lose track of time. Always ensure you have a safe exit route back to the beach entrance.
Best Spots to Explore During Low Tide
There are lots of incredible spots along the Oregon Coast to explore during low tide. Here are a few locations to consider. Keep in mind, there may be a small parking fee at these beach entrances and public parking lots.
Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach: One of the most iconic landmarks on the Oregon Coast, Haystack Rock is a haven for tide pool exploration. During low tide, the base of the rock reveals a vibrant array of sea life. Keep an eye out for colorful starfish and delicate anemones clinging to the rocks.
Ecola State Park: Nestled between Cannon Beach and Seaside, Ecola State Park offers stunning vistas and excellent tidepooling. The park’s Crescent Beach is particularly rewarding during low tide, revealing marine life and picturesque scenery.
A more secluded spot within Ecola State Park is Indian Beach. There are tide pools teeming with sea creatures, cool rock formations and picturesque views of the coastline. Also, it’s a popular spot for surfers.
Hug Point, Arch Cape: Hug Point is a historic and picturesque location with unique geological features. Waterfalls, sea caves and tide pools can be enjoyed during low tide. The area is also rich in history with remnants of old wagon roads visible along the cliffs. Be mindful of the tide schedule, as some areas can become inaccessible quickly.
Short Sand Beach, Oswald West State Park: The beach offers excellent tidepooling opportunities with a variety of marine life and unique rock formations. The surrounding forest adds to the scenic beauty of the area. The beach is a short hike from the parking area.
