Looking for a fitness routine that doesn’t take itself too seriously? Want an excuse to wear neon spandex, break into spontaneous aerobics and power-walk through a mall like it’s 1989? Here’s the group fitness class for you. Food Court 5000 is Portland’s retro fitness mall walking movement.
Treat the mall like a fashion runway and a dance floor at these weekly events.
Here’s how to join in on the fun:
Food Court 5000: Retro Mall Walking at Lloyd Center
Every Sunday at 11 a.m., a crew of fast-walking, snack-loving, nostalgia-obsessed locals gather at the Lloyd Center Mall for 90 minutes of high-energy strutting, synchronized sass and the occasional jazz hand.
This gathering is part workout and part performance meant to spread joy and celebrate movement and community.
The event is free to attend. No sign ups, fees or judgment.
Tips for First Timers
- Dress in layers. The mall climate is unpredictable.
- Bring water. All your moves are bound to work up a sweat.
- Bring your flair. Costumes are optional but attendees are encouraged to channel their inner 80s style with windbreakers, leg warmers, fanny packs and headbands.
- All ages welcome. Whether you’re 8 or 80, every strut deserves a spotlight.
Meet your host, Vera Mysteria, at the food court. Lloyd Center Mall is at 2201 Lloyd Center in Portland.
