Friday, March 14, is Pi Day. Hurray! It feels like we’ve been waiting a whole year for this. And, coincidentally, Pi Day, the day that celebrates the mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, approximated to be 3.14 . . . (hence, the 3-14 date), is Albert Einstein‘s 135th birthday. Time to break out the birthday pie!
Speaking of anniversaries, this is the 26th anniversary of the first Pi Day, celebrated at San Francisco’s Exploratorium when a bunch of people marched in a circle and then enjoyed some fruit pie. The celebration there has become more formal, with free admission, a chorus of “Happy Birthday, Albert Einstein” and lots of pie, including pizza pie.
In Portland, you’ll find Pi Day pie deals at Pacific Pie Co.‘s two locations. The price for a piece of sweet pie is just $3.14. Check it out at 1668 NW 23 Ave. or 1520 SE 7 Ave.
In addition, you can enter a photo of your own Pi Day pie by posting it on Facebook using the hashtag #PieDay and tagging both Pacific Pie Co. and Portland Pedal Power. Don’t wait too long. The prize — a FREE pie — will be delivered to the winner before 3:14 p.m. on 3-14. But all who enter the contest will get a coupon for FREE delivery of a pie, but you have to pay for the pie and live in the delivery area. (As Einstein might tell you, it’s better to make a knockout pie, post its picture and win the prize.)
An historical note: Archimedes, a Greek mathematician who lived in the third century B.C., was the one who approximated the value of pi at 3.1415926 . . . ad infinitum. Now math and pie lovers all over the world celebrate his achievement by eating pie while discussing the relevance of pi. Enjoy the day!
