It really must be spring. The flowers are in bloom, we occasionally see the sun and the City of Portland this weekend is launching its series of free walks around town known as the Ten Toe Express Walks, as well as the first of five neighborhood Sunday Parkways for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Besides that, it’s Mother’s Day weekend.
This Saturday, May 10, don’t miss the opportunity to go on a FREE four-mile stroll with Portland treasure Laura Foster, author of numerous books on wonderful walks around Portland. Meet at The Grotto parking lot (8840 NE Skidmore St.) at 9 a.m. for a two-and-a-half-hour walk that will rise to the summit of Rocky Butte and conclude in the peaceful forested area of The Grotto.
If you miss Saturday’s walk with Laura, she’ll repeat it on Thursday, July 10, at 6 p.m.
There are two other Ten Toe Express Walks in May: Thursday, May 15, at 6 p.m., meeting at Irving Park, NE 9th and Fremont, to explore Historic Albina; and Saturday, May 31, at 9 a.m. to stroll through Historic Sellwood. Check the website for details and dates of walks scheduled through September.
East Portland Sunday Parkways is this Sunday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will surely be a lot of fit and fun moms celebrating Mother’s Day by bicycling, walking or dancing along the 7-mile route. The route follows the Springwater Corridor for several miles and passes by Glenwood, Bloomington and Ed Benedict Parks. There will be no automobile traffic on the route for the five hours of the event, but lots of activities, music, vendors and free bike repair, if needed.
The next Sunday Parkways will be on June 22 in North Portland. Check the website for dates and locations of Sunday Parkways events on July 27 (Northeast Portland), August 24 (Southeast Portland) and September 28 (Southwest Portland).
