Have you ever noticed how so many of the once-majestic trees lining our highways and biways are literally strangled by ivy vines? English Ivy, which was brought to the Northwest by well intentioned pioneers who believed the creeping crud would enhance their environment, has become a scourge, sucking the life out of our trees.
Our heroes, the members of the No Ivy League, have organized in Portland an annual No Ivy Day for decades. Bit by bit, they’re doing their part to liberate the trees from this life-sucking green plague.
You can pitch in on No Ivy Day, Saturday, Oct. 25, by joining a morning work party, and then celebrating with everyone at the League’s headquarters in Forest Park with refreshments, speakers and conviviality.
