Tied to the lunisolar calendar, Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in China, and it is also widely celebrated throughout Asia. There are several ways to enjoy traditional and contemporary cultural activities right here in Portland.
Here are five upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations in Portland.
2023 Lunar New Year Celebrations in Portland
Chinese New Year Cultural Fair
January 21
On Saturday, January 21, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., enjoy a showcase of Chinese cultural activities at the Oregon Convention Center.
Admission is $10 per person and free for ages 3 and under. View all event details.
Chinese New Year at Lan Su Chinese Garden
January 21-February 5
The two-week festival features hanging red lanterns, performances, light displays and activities. Attend the Chinese New Year opening celebration, the daytime festival or the lantern viewing evenings. View ticket prices.
Bonus Event: Taiko Concert and Ramen Dinner at the Oregon Buddhist Temple
January 21
On Saturday, January 21 at 5 p.m., see a live Taiko performance and ramen dinner at the Oregon Buddhist Temple.

Lunar New Year Celebration at the Milwaukie Community Center
January 22
Usher in the Year of the Rabbit at the Milwaukie Community Center’s Lunar New Year Celebration from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Learn about special traditions through activities, music and more at the Milwaukie Community Center.
Lunar New Year Dragon Dance Parade and Celebration
January 28
On Saturday, January 28 at 10 a.m., attend the seventh annual Lunar New Year Dragon Dance Parade and Celebration. Celebrate the Year of the Rabbit with a special parade through Portland.
A 150-foot dragon will be accompanied by lion dancers, performers, and a lively community parade through Old Town, Downtown, and ending at the Oregon Historical Society Park Plaza.

Lunar New Year Celebration at Washington Square
January 28
Washington Square is celebrating the Year of the Rabbit with a special event focusing on good fortune and happiness. Lunar New Year Celebration at Washington Square is Saturday, January 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the mall’s center court.

Portland Dumping Week
January 29-February 4
The annual Portland Dumpling Week is celebrating dumplings for its ninth year with specials throughout the city. There are 30 Portland restaurants putting their own fold on dumplings. Some will offer traditional flavors while others are embracing dumpling fusion by serving up a new take on the savory dining experience. View all the participating restaurants in Portland.
