As winter descends upon the city, a peculiar and thrilling tradition is set to unfold—the Portland Krampus Parade.
The event, known as the Krampus Lauf, embodies the darker side of the holiday spirit. This unique event promises a blend of tradition, creativity and community spirit that captures the dark side of the holiday season.
Here are the details about the 2023 event.
2023 Portland Krampus Parade
The Portland Krampus Lauf is begins at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 10. At Sewallcrest Park, festivities kick off with a performance by the PDX Dancing Witches, setting the stage for an evening of enchanting celebration.
The event promises to be a visual and auditory feast, with banners, birch floggers, and noise makers adding to the lively atmosphere. Parade participants will be decked out in costumes, masks, bells and musical instruments.
The organizers emphasize the importance of a slow and deliberate procession. There are many stops along the way. You won’t want to miss the Krampus carol sung for all to hear.
Characters
On one of the longest nights of the year, an array of creatures and characters are stalking the sidewalks during Krampus Lauf. Participants are donning homemade costumes representing several faces of the dark Christmas folklore.
Meet Krampus, the horned anthropomorphic haunt known for punishing naughty children. there’s devil-like creatures called Perchten. The mythical pranksters know as Yule Lads and everyone’s unbeloved Christmas witch Frau Perchta are in attendance. There’s also Klaubauf, Krampus’ Bavarian cousin.
Parade Schedule and Route
The procession begins at 4:30 p.m.. Participants take a winding journey from Sewallcrest Park along the sidewalks of the Hawthorne district.
The parade heads North on Southeast 30th Ave. to Hawthorne Blvd. Then the creatures stalk East on Hawthorne Blvd. to Cesar Chavez Blvd. The procession then turns around and heads back to Sewallcrest Park.
The Portland Krampus Lauf invites you to join in the revelry. Whether you want to be a spectator or join as your favorite holiday creature, this event is open to everyone of all ages.
