The Benson Hotel is continuing its long-standing tradition of creating a gingerbread masterpiece for the holiday season. For the 50th year, the historic Portland hotel has made a special gingerbread creation the centerpiece of its lobby.
This year’s gingerbread masterpiece theme is “Polar Express.” The sculpture was crafted entirely by hand, created with 100 pounds of gingerbread, 50 pounds of white chocolate, 25 pounds of sculpting chocolate and 5 pounds of rice-marshmallow treats.
The gingerbread display features a woodland area, sugar frozen pond with ice skaters and a 3D gingerbread tree with lights and decorations. See Santa’s Village, made from gingerbread, royal icing, chocolate and pastillage.
The 2021 display was made by Baker Robert Bragdon, owner of Next Dimension Bakery in Portland. Surrounding the gingerbread display are 300 poinsettias and a 20-foot Douglas fir Christmas tree.
Adding to the festivities, the hotel recently announced the opening of its new “Historic Stairwell,” a twelve-story exhibition of photographs documenting the hotel’s and Portland’s histories.
While visiting The Benson, you can bring a donation of a new, unwrapped toy to support the Fox 12 Les Schwab Annual Toy Drive. Toy donations will be accepted through December 17. This is not required to see the gingerbread masterpiece.
The Benson’s gingerbread masterpiece will be available for free public viewing in the lobby through December 26. Social distancing and masks required.
