If you love the outdoors, you’ve probably heard about REI and its lifetime membership. Yet, is joining the co-op worth it? Let’s explore the member benefits.
REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) is a popular outdoor retail co-op that has been outfitting adventurers since 1938. Known for its high-quality gear, expert advice and commitment to sustainability, REI offers everything from hiking boots and camping tents to cycling and climbing equipment.
Unlike traditional retailers, REI operates as a member-owned cooperative, meaning customers can buy a lifetime membership and enjoy exclusive benefits like annual dividends, special discounts and access to members discounted events and services.
Are you considering joining the co-op? Here’s what you need to know about REI membership benefits:
10 REI Membership Benefits You Should Know About
How Much is an REI Membership?
A lifetime REI membership is $30. Just pay this fee once and you’ll be a member forever. There are no renewal fees or additional fees to maintain your membership.
As soon as you join, you’re eligible for a full pack of exclusive benefits. The co-op is also offering new members $30 toward their first order through March 13, 2025.
Also, the co-op donates $5 to the REI Cooperative Action Fund with the purchase of each lifetime membership.
1. Get 10% Back on Purchases
One of the biggest perks is the 10% annual dividend on eligible purchases, which gives members a portion of their spending back as store credit each year.
2. Discounted Gear Rentals
Many REI locations offer gear rentals for camping, backpacking, cycling and skiing. As a member, you get up to 33% off rentals. This is a great way to try out gear before committing to a purchase.
If you’re traveling, check to see if there is an REI store near your destination. You can rent and pick up your items when you get there, saving on baggage fees and more expensive rental prices at other outdoor stores.
3. Special Member-Only Coupons
Throughout the year, REI sends exclusive discount codes, bonus cards and offers to members. These often include 20% off one full-price item and an extra 20% off an outlet item, making them perfect for scoring deals on gear.
4. Trade-In Program for Used Gear
The Re/Supply trade-in program lets members trade in used gear for REI gift cards.
If you upgrade your gear frequently, this is an easy way to recoup some of your costs and keep your gear in circulation rather than in a landfill.
You can bring your used gear to an REI Re/Supply store or ship it for only $6.
5. Free and Discount Bike and Ski Tune-Ups
Get your gear ready for the season at bike and ski shops located inside REI stores. If you’re an avid cyclist or skier, this can pay for itself quickly.
Also, members get a free tube with purchase of flat tire repair and free machine wax for skis or boards.
6. Early Access to Big Sales
REI holds major sales throughout the year, like the Anniversary Sale and Labor Day Sale. Members sometimes get early access to shop before the general public, which is especially useful when stock is limited.
7. Rewards on REI Credit Card Purchases
If you have the REI Co-op Mastercard, you earn an extra 5% back on REI purchases and 1.5% back on everyday spending. Plus, there is no annual fee.
8. Free and Discount Classes and Events
From camping and backpacking workshops to kayak demos to flat tire workshops, REI hosts classes and events throughout the year.
Many of these are free or heavily discounted for members, making them a great way to learn new skills and meet like-minded adventurers.
9. Extended Return Policy
REI already has a great return policy. Members get a one-year return window on most purchases, compared to the standard 90-day return policy for non-members. This makes buying gear risk-free.
10. Free Shipping
Hate paying shipping fees? This membership may be worth it just to avoid those pesky costs. REI members get free U.S. standard shipping. No minimum order required.
If you’re an adventurer who wants to upgrade your gear and grow your knowledge in an environment that cultivates a community of outdoor enthusiasts, an REI membership is packed with value. Even if you only buy gear a few times a year or as gifts, the benefits likely outweigh the reasonable one-time membership fee.
