Where to Sell Used Furniture
Before diving into where to sell your used furniture, it’s essential to take a few steps to ensure a successful experience:
- Present your furniture well. Clean your furniture before taking high-quality photos from multiple angles. Good lighting and a tidy background can make a significant difference in attracting buyers. Highlight any unique features and be honest about any imperfections in your photos and item description.
- Set a competitive price. Before I sell items, I take 10 minutes to research similar items to determine a fair price. This can be done on the online marketplace where you plan to offer the item, or you can do a general Google search. Consider the condition, brand and age of the piece. I tend to lean toward pricing items to sell, but if you have something special, don’t sell your item short. You can always bring the price down later.
- Write detailed descriptions. Provide a comprehensive description of your furniture, including dimensions, material, color, condition and any notable features. Some people also want to know if the furniture has been in a home with pets or smoking.
- Promote your listing. If you have time, consider sharing your listing across multiple platforms to reach a wider audience. In addition to using popular online marketplaces, share in local community groups. Be sure to note where everything it listed so you can take down all the item postings once it sells.
- Communicate promptly and safely. Respond quickly to inquiries and be open to questions and requests to see your item in person. Arrange to meet buyers in public places or have a friend or family member with you if the exchange happens at your home. I recommend keeping sale items in your garage or bringing them outside before the buyer arrives. Ensure payment is confirmed before handing over the furniture.
Next, choose whether you want to try selling them online or in store. I’ve gathered an insider’s guide to online marketplaces and secondhand shops to help you choose the right selling option for you.

The platform facilitates communication between buyers and sellers, allowing for easy negotiation and coordination of transactions. Plus, it has built-in safety features like user profiles and ratings. You can also choose to offer shipping, allowing you to attract a wider audience.
On this platform, you are responsible for listing your items and coordinating pickup locations. For safety, I recommend agreeing upon a sale price before you meet and meeting up with your buyer in a public space. This may not always work for larger furniture items. In that case, place the item in your garage for easy loading or plan on moving it outside before your buyer arrives.
On Facebook Marketplace, I have sold various furniture items, from a hope chest to a bar cart to a chair and footstool. I’ve had listed items move quickly and fair negotiations with buyers.
