Why buy your compost when you can get it for free? Portland Bureau of Transportation is making your spring gardening cheaper and easier with free composting days.
In the fall, PBOT collected leaves from city streets and has been converting it into high-quality compost. In celebration of Earth Day, PBOT will be giving away all of this built up compost. And the best part? It’s completely free.
From April 17-25, 2021, you can pick up free compost at the Sunderland Maintenance Yard, 9325 NE Sunderland Road. The event is open each day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There is no limit to the amount of compost you can take. If you have an open-bed vehicle, PBOT will load up the compost for you. If you are getting it a bag at a time, pack up your own shovel and bags.
In past years, compost has run out. This year has a shortened time frame to encourage you to plan your visit so you don’t miss out on this awesome freebie.
Face masks are required and physical distancing will be observed. If you have questions, visit the Facebook event or contact PBOT at (503) 823-3500.
