The chief of the Merry Pranksters has been gone for 13 years but his indomitable spirit lives on. Author Ken Kesey is the subject of OPB’s Oregon Experience, which will air Monday, January 20 at 9 p.m. For a FREE preview of the show, with McMenamins beer on tap, get to the Mission Theater at Northwest 17 and Glisan St. Friday night, January 17, in plenty of time to claim a seat and order some food and beer. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. screening.
And for those who’d rather stay at home Friday night and watch a video on Netflix, may I suggest “Magic Trip,” a 2011 documentary about Kesey’s 1964 cross-country trip (double-entendre intended) with a bus full of Merry Pranksters. It’s a fascinating look at Sixties culture in America that paints a rather admirable portrait of Kesey, showing his qualities as a leader and a friend.
