Want to add some shade, flowers or fall color to your yard without spending a dime? Portland Parks & Recreation’s Urban Forestry program is giving away 4,500 free trees at six events this fall.

Eligible Portland properties can receive up to three trees, along with free mulch and tree care materials.

How to Get Free Trees in Portland

The Free Yard Trees program offers a variety of trees, including native, evergreen, flowering, nut-producing and heat-tolerant species.

Trees are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To participate:

• Register online and select your preferred trees, subject to availability.
• Pick up your trees at one of six fall giveaway events. You’ll also receive a watering bucket filled with mulch and tree care information.
• Plant your trees on private property within Portland city limits. Businesses and places of worship are also eligible.

Trees cannot be planted in street planting strips between sidewalks and curbs. The city recommends planting trees at least 10 feet from buildings, 2 feet from property lines and 5 feet from driveways and water meters.

Free delivery and planting assistance are available for people with limited mobility or accessibility needs. Other participants are responsible for transporting and planting their trees.

Participants must also agree to allow Urban Forestry to check on their trees during the summer.
