Free Mushroom Mania at Tryon Creek Natural Area

Celebrate fall and fungi at Mushroom Mania at Tryon Creek State Natural Area on Sunday, November 8, 2026. This free, family-friendly event features guided hikes, truffle dog demonstrations, educational presentations, crafts, storytime and more.

Located in Southwest Portland, Tryon Creek is one of Portland’s best urban parks. Its moss-covered trees, towering ferns and forested trails make it a great place to explore the Pacific Northwest’s temperate rainforest ecosystem. The park also offers free guided nature walks throughout the year.

Here’s what to expect at this year’s Mushroom Mania celebration.

2026 Mushroom Mania at Tryon Creek

The third annual Mushroom Mania takes place Sunday, November 8, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Hosted by Oregon State Parks, the event celebrates the fascinating world of fungi and the important role mycelium plays in keeping forests healthy.

Visitors of all ages can enjoy educational activities, explore the forest and learn more about local mushrooms.

Free Mushroom Mania Activities

Here’s the schedule of activities:

• 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.: Truffle dog demonstrations. Meet award-winning truffle dog Happy Harvi the Truffle King, watch him show off his truffle-hunting skills and check out his new book.
• 10 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m.: Guided hikes. Explore the forest and learn about fungi along Tryon Creek’s trails.
• 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.: Storytime. Join local author Jeff Marcovics for a book reading.
• 11 a.m.: Guest ranger presentation. Hear from Park Ranger Dane Osis about the fascinating world of fungi.

Throughout the day, families can also enjoy a scavenger hunt with the chance to find a mushroom figurine, along with crafts and face painting in the Nature Center.

Vendors will be set up in the Education Pavilion.

Admission and Parking

Mushroom Mania is free to attend, and no registration is required. However, parking passes are required at Tryon Creek State Natural Area.

November weather in Portland can be unpredictable, so dress for rain and muddy trails. Guided hikes will take place rain or shine, while the remaining activities will be held indoors.
