If you’ve ever wanted to try hockey but could do without the ice skates, bulky pads and body checking, floorball might be more your speed.
Portland Floorball Club hosts weekly pickup games in Beaverton, and new players can try their first game night for free. Beginners are welcome, you don’t need to own any equipment and the club is open to players ages 16 and older.
After that first free visit, weekly games are $20.
What Is Floorball?
Floorball is a fast-paced, non-contact version of indoor hockey played on foot instead of skates. Players use lightweight sticks and a plastic ball, so the game moves quickly without requiring much gear.
If you’ve played hockey before, some of it will feel familiar. But people coming from soccer, basketball or lacrosse may recognize the same kinds of quick passing, movement into open space and fast changes of possession.
There’s also no body checking, icing or offsides, which helps keep play moving and makes the sport relatively easy to jump into.
What to Expect at a Portland Floorball Game Night
Portland Floorball Club runs its Thursday sessions as pickup games rather than formal league play.
Players rotate through short games and swap in and out frequently, so there’s plenty of action without spending two straight hours sprinting around a gym. The format also gives newcomers a chance to learn by playing rather than sitting through a long introduction to the rules.
You don’t need to buy equipment before giving it a try. The club provides loaner sticks, so first-time players just need athletic clothes and court or running shoes.
That makes floorball a particularly easy sport to test-drive: show up, borrow a stick and see whether you like it.
Your First Portland Floorball Game Is Free
New players get their first visit free. Afterward, regular Thursday game nights cost $20.
It’s a good option if you’re looking for a social workout, miss playing team sports or simply want to try something you probably didn’t play in high school gym class.
The club welcomes beginners as well as more experienced players, including people interested in competitive play.
Players need to register before attending. Visit the Portland Floorball Club website for registration instructions and current game information.
